What would go into your dream bag?
Everybody has a dream bag, some of us are lucky enough to have reached this stage and own a dream bag, lucky you. Take a second to think about what would be in your bag if money and availability was no option, what would you have? I have thought long and hard about it and this is what I have come up with.
I have recently fallen in love with mirrorless camera’s and will be including this into my dream bag, so let it begin. I love my current Think Tank Photo Retrospective 20 and it is a terrific bag but I would love to go with ONA’s The Brixton in the smoke finish, in my opinion this is the most beautiful camera bag currently in existence and something that I very much lust for. I have a love of shoulder bags especially ones that don’t look like camera bags, The Brixton is one such bag that does this very well, looking like a simple messenger bag to blend in while on your travels.
I will be picking two types of camera systems because this is my dream list and I can do what I want. I would be carrying both systems in the one bag as the way they will configure I think this will work. The DSLR that I would choose is the Canon 5D MkIII, I have a preference for Canon over Nikon or any of the other brands, its quite simple why this is. I prefer the Canon in the hand more than the others, the Canon just feels right for me, plain and simple. The operation of the dials and just the way it sits in the hand works for me so that is why I choose the Canon.
I chose the 5D MkIII over any of the 1-series, the 6D, the 5D MkII, the 7D or anything else in the EOS stable is I feel the Mark III is an absolute workhorse of a camera and one of the best Canon has built, it takes all of the best technologies that Canon currently has and rolls them into a very tidy body. I know several different photographers that have bought this camera and love them to pieces. The super fast focus system of the 1DX, a terrific sensor with amazing high ISO performance makes this a perfect choice as my DSLR.
I think that a good DSLR kit is made up of 3 lenses. Depending what you wish to photograph, I would be using this kit for travel, editorial, portraiture and anything else I feel like. I currently own the 24-70mm f2.8L, the 70-200mm f2.8L and the 50mm f1.4. This is a very good general kit but I think that building a dream kit I would move in a different direction, since buying my Fujifilm I have truly come to love prime lenses. Smaller, lighter, faster, cheaper (usually) and an improvement in overal image quality has resulted in me deciding my dream kit lenses would be all primes. I don’t really like wide lenses, I find something a little longer more appealing to me so my lenses will reflect that. My choices would be the Canon 50mm f1.2L, the Canon 85mm f1.2L and the Canon 135mm f2L. These lenses are at the pinnacle of Canon lenses, some of the best glass currently made. A huge aperture of f1.2 on both the 50mm and the 85mm combined with the high ISO of the 5D MkIII means I have almost no limits to light restriction. The 135mm f2L is widely regarded as the sharpest canon lens in existence I have shot a few test shots with this lens in a store and instantly fell in love (this lens has been on my wish list for a while)
So now that the bag, DSLR and lenses for the DSLR are picked there is still room in their for a mirrorless offering. And what could I choose as my dream mirrorless camera? How can I go past the iconic red dot? Short answer, I can’t. Leica is one of the most iconic brands in photographic circles and produce some amazing cameras and lenses. Their latest offering is the Leica M240 (I know its just called the ‘M’ and that the code number is the 240 but I think ‘M240′ has a nice ring to it.) This camera has been the long awaited replacement of the legendary M9, one of the most widely regarded camera’s in history. The M240 picks up where the M9 left off and has some big changes resulting in some very nice benefits from what I have read this Leica is brilliant and improves on the shortfalls of the M9. I think that having only one lens on my mirrorless option is the way to go, the mirrorless camera would be the camera that is the first one grabbed when something presents itself, no point fumbling with lenses to catch a shot. My glass of choice for a legendary Leica is the equally legendary Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH, I love the 50mm field of view and this is one of the best 50mm their is.
Thankfully the ONA Brixton has a slot for up to a 13″ laptop and I would have the Apple 11″ Macbook Air in a heartbeat, small yet powerful means this is a perfect addition to the dream bag along with Adobe Lightroom as my editing software of choice. The only thing that would go with the bag as well is accessories for the camera’s and the laptop including, spare battery for the 5D and the M240, 3 memory cards for each camera which gives one loaded and two spares which is more than enough, cleaning pen for lenses and anything else that gets dirty, an external hard drive (probably the LaCie Rugged) and my ever faithful Rhodia notepad and parker pen.
This sums up my dream kit, I would love to hear you opinion on what your thoughts are on my kit and also what would be in your dream bag?
